Machine Shop Shift Lead - 3 Shift
Basic Function
To ensure the shift operates at an optimum level of safety, efficiency, and effectiveness in order to meet customer and company expectations for product quality. This includes adherence to associated procedures, the development of fully capable and reliable processes, and the effective utilisation of equipment and a flexible, skilled workforce.
To play a pivotal role in developing a team culture that promotes continual improvement across Safety, People, Products, Processes, Procedures, and overall performance.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Manufacturing Manager.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Health, Safety and Environment
• Ensure the team adheres to company rules, including safety standards; maintain a strong presence on the shop floor to reinforce safe working practices.
• Brief toolbox talks and safety work instructions as advised by the EHS Lead.
• Conduct workplace risk assessments as necessary to ensure a safe environment for employees and visitors.
• Report accidents and near misses in accordance with the accident reporting procedure, and proactively assist with preventive and corrective actions.
• Liaise with Facilities to fulfil any required environmental activities.
Leadership
•Lead the shift to achieve production targets, including conducting start-of-shift meetings covering performance and daily goals.
• Manage and hold Team Leaders accountable for labour distribution and output.
•Oversee labour allocation and training needs; make recommendations to the Manufacturing Manager for approval.
• Take responsibility for team performance, conduct, and adherence to company rules.
• Ensure all employees receive updates, news, and required training.
• Maintain and regularly update skills matrices to support employee development.
• Assist with interviewing new operators.
• Manage timesheets, holiday schedules, return-to-work interviews, and related admin.
• Conduct performance reviews and annual grading activities.
• Develop and encourage a positive team culture within the machine shop.
• Maintain a visible and supportive presence on the shop floor.
Delivery
• Oversee daily machine operations, troubleshoot issues, and organise rework to
maintain flow through the machine shop.
• Action weekly goals set by the line manager.
• Lead daily Gemba walks for the Manufacturing Manager.
• Ensure accurate and timely job bookings.
• Support Team Leaders with machine allocation and job prioritisation.
• Raise purchase requisitions for approved suppliers (tools, oils, Mazak, Sunnen, batteries, etc.).
• Control and report on Kanban levels.
• Hold weekly meetings with the Manufacturing Manager to review issues and propose solutions.
• Support and escalate maintenance issues as required.
• Track improvement activities through CI and HIVE and encourage team-generated improvement ideas.
• Implement direct instructions from the Manufacturing Manager and support change initiatives.
• Report previous day’s metrics at SFM meetings.
• Manage, coordinate, and monitor all TPM activities to ensure machine tool maintenance is carried out in line with documented TPM procedures.
• Drive initiatives that reduce downtime, improve machine reliability, and increase OEE.
Quality
• Lead root cause analysis (RCA) sessions with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, and operators following scrap or collision events.
• Contribute to and manage the integrity of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the machine shop.
• Report corrective actions to relevant departments and provide improvement suggestions.
• Ensure accurate job bookings and completion of operational records to support traceability and quality control.
• Support continuous improvement activities that enhance process quality and reduce scrap.
• Ensure the team actively participates in CI activities to remove waste and improve efficiency.
Other
• Maintain a high standard of housekeeping and cleanliness in the machine shop.
• Support auditing activities to ensure compliance with required standards.
• Perform any other tasks reasonably requested by management.
Knowledge & Ability Required
• Relevant experience in a CNC machine shop environment.
• Demonstrable ability to set and run the majority of machine tools within the defined processes for the product portfolio.
• Ability to lead through organising, coaching, mentoring, developing, and motivating team members.
• Attributes: open-minded, change-oriented, target-driven, methodical, supportive, forward-thinking, with a positive, proactive, and approachable leadership style.
• Strong communication skills at all levels of the business.
• Computer literate.
